Could this be a camouflaged Winnebago factory prototype in Arizona for hot-weather testing
Could this be a camouflaged Winnebago factory prototype in Arizona for hot-weather testing, or maybe a onetime mule for the RV that General Motors designed around the Toronado’s front-wheel drive? After GM ended its 1966-70 dalliance with FWD luxury cars, dirt-cheap Toronados and Eldorados—devalued by unique, discontinued engine-transmission assemblies—encouraged countless DIY camper conversions. GMC’s own 1973-78 Motorhome demonstrated that extra weight and wind resistance posed no problems for standard V8s that ultimately grew to 500ci/400hp (Cad) and 455ci/385hp (Olds). Possibly all those other builds turned out more aerodynamic than a clever drag racer’s self-contained transporter. Probably nobody ever spent less to drag around a full-length dragster.
